I have an upcoming show in June (see previous post), so I decided it would be a good idea to create some new pieces to exhibit. This is the first. It's a continuation/variation of a previous theme of mine in an oil painting called "Second Skin", this time done in watercolor on a much smaller scale. I may do more of these if I don't tire from blatantly ripping off Van Gogh.
I'm a huge Elliott Smith fan (as some of you already know) and for the longest time I wanted to illustrate one of his songs, "Condor Avenue" in particular. Something about the imagery, its darkness, just calls to me. Anyway, I finally found the confidence to actually do it and I finished it last night. Here it is, in watercolor. "She took the Oldsmobile out past Condor Avenue OK, so I've been slacking off lately. It's true. I apologize, mostly to myself. There's no excuse good enough. That being said, I'd like to announce some new shit. First of all, I've become active again on Tumblr and deviantART. This is good news for two reasons: 1. seeing other people's art always lights a fire under my ass and 2. I have another avenue for exposure. I've really been getting into all the social networks lately. Ironically, the one I used to spend most of my time on, Facebook, has become the least interesting to me. Going back to other people's art, I went to STAPLE! The Independent Media Expo for the first time yesterday. Talk about over-stimulation! There were so many wonderfully gifted artists there that were, for the most part, very willing to talk about their craft. I learned a lot and I got my fill of inspiration. This is the stash of art I came home with: I know, right?!? AMAAAAAAAAAAAAZING!!! And this is all I had money for (the rest was spent on new art supplies). I can't wait to go back next year, especially since I kinda wanna get my own booth. I have to check into it first, but I'll keep you posted if I do. Regarding my own work, I started two new pieces a week or so ago. I finished "Lily" first; "Spider" was completed just about an hour ago. He's literally scanning right now. I'll post her first. And here's "Spider": He's not available anywhere yet, because he's a birthday gift to a friend, but I imagine prints will be up in my shop soon. Other than that, uh, hmmm. Oh, the Valentine's Day cards went over real well and I started a new sketch today. Hopefully I'll have something new to show you this week. I better, since I just spent a fuckton of money on new supplies at Jerry's Artarama! XO, Angel Laveaux P.S. If you want to keep up with me online (besides here), you can follow me at these fine places, with more to come soon, I am sure: Etsy Wordpress Tumblr deviantART (And these are just the ones I'm willing to share!) Holy shit, I haven't been here in a month!?! Well, I have been preoccupied with my Wordpress and, actually, I have been painting a bit. Let's see... There was the watercolor I did for my parents for Christmas ("Love At First Sight"), then "Dita Von Teese" and today I finished "I Heart You" (all pictured below). I was going to use Dita's portrait as the basis of my handmade Valentine's Day cards, but then had a change of heart (heh). Instead I am going to use the latter once I add some mystery components to it. I will also be offering them for sell in my Etsy shop. If you're interested, stay tuned for details, as they say. Other than that, there's not much to say. I am expecting a late Christmas present from my beloved tomorrow, a Google Nexus 10 tablet. SQUEE!!! I am so excited!!! It's been on back order for weeks. Hopefully it will guide me to new, exciting things. I feel a lot of change in the air... XO, Angel Laveaux You might notice some changes around here. While updating my cousin's web site, Mandy Gor Art, I was inspired to spruce up my own digs a bit. Both projects are sure to keep me up late, but that's fine. I'm proud of my work in progress, even if it is just the mundane businessy type. By the way, I promise to get back to the drawing board soon. Sorry, been kinda blah lately. Anyway, check out the new format and check out Mandy's wonderful art. I'll also be setting her up with her very own Etsy store soon, too. XO, Angel Laveaux Take advantage of my Black Friday and Cyber Monday deals by using coupon code HOLIDAZE and save 20% off everything in my Etsy shop starting now through Monday night at midnight! Also, have a safe and happy holiday season, everyone! XO, Angel Laveaux I'm caught up on my sleep, so you know what that means - PICTURE POST!!! I just organized all the photos I took (excluding the ones from my cell phone - FUCK THAT) at the Hotel California art exhibit here at the Red Eyed Fly in Austin and the 15th Annual Trick or Treat Festival & Halloween Hearse Show that was held in California. I won't caption all of them since there are so many (and they're in no discernible order), but feel free to ask if you have any questions. Also, it's important to know that my cousin's altar (of which I contributed my Poe portraits) won first place. Heh. OCTOBER WAS INSANE! I must be delirious. I know I'm battling exhaustion. As much fun as some of it has been, I'm really looking forward to everything calming the fuck down for a while. L.A. was cool. The art show at the Red Eyed Fly was rad, too. I will share pix as soon as I get some sleep. I took tomorrow off to get my shit together. I feel like I'm running on fumes. And junk food. Not good, although Niecy shared some excellent cookies and donuts with me tonight. Mmmm... Thank you, ma chérie. I've also been working the election the past two weeks (for those of you who don't know me that well yet, I work at the local Elections Division part time on top of my boring full time job). It's over. I just got home. I hear Obama won. I'm glad. I may not know that much about this sorta thing (I don't consider myself overly political), but I myself have to put basic human rights over and above economy. That's all I'm going to say about that. Last week was also probably the most manic-depressive week in my whole life. While I was still in California, I found out one of my oldest friends died suddenly and tragically. Then my brother's first child was born on Halloween (HI, RUSTY!!!). Between flying home and going back to work (at both jobs) immediately and putting together a last minute memorial and geeking out over baby pictures, I was a laughing, crying, not-sleeping, neurotic mess. Life is fucking crazy that way sometimes. Just gotta roll with it. Now I feel like I can breathe a little. I just want to do NOTHING for a while. Except draw. I miss drawing. The only time I've had for my personal art has been during lulls in my shifts. I have some ideas. I'll leave you with a sketch I did earlier tonight while chasing away the boredom before the election really got exciting. I'll catch up with you soon, world. I just need a day to sleep first. I just wanted to let you know I haven't forgotten you, nor will I ever. XO, Angel Laveaux That's a pensive looking dude.Lots going on, but my brain is scattered like leaves. I am taking part in an art show tomorrow night at the Red Eyed Fly (flyer below) with a ton of other über talented people. I think I posted about this already. I got myself a Square card reader so I can take credit cards on the go. Hopefully people will buy up all the prints I am selling. I still have a lot of work to do, but I am very, very excited! That's it for now. I hope some of you can make it, even if only in spirit. More news coming soon... XO, Angel Laveaux |
